A review of 15 papers reporting 25 independent correlations of perceived beauty with perceived usability showed a remarkably high variability in the reported coefficients. This may be due to methodological inconsistencies. For example, products are often not selected systematically, and statistical tests are rarely performed to test the generality of findings across products. In addition, studies often restrict themselves to simply reporting correlations without further specification of underlying judgmental processes.

The present study's main objective is to re-examine the relation between beauty and usability, that is, the implication that “what is beautiful is usable.” To rectify previous methodological shortcomings, both products and participants were sampled in the same way and the data aggregated both by averaging over participants to assess the covariance across ratings of products and by averaging over products to assess the covariance across participants. In addition, we adopted an inference perspective to qualify underlying processes to examine the possibility that, under the circumstances pertaining in most studies of this kind where participants have limited experience of using a website or product, the relationship between beauty and usability is mediated by goodness.

A mediator analysis of the relationship between beauty, the overall evaluation (i.e., “goodness”) and pragmatic quality (as operationalization of usability) suggests that the relationship between beauty and usability has been overplayed as the correlation between pragmatic quality and beauty is wholly mediated by goodness. This pattern of relationships was consistent across four different data sets and different ways of data aggregation. Finally, suggestions are made regarding methodologies that could be used in future studies that build on these results.  相似文献

This article reports an extraction–purification of napins from an industrial rapeseed meal and the assessment of their antimicrobial activity against Fusarium langsethiae. The best extraction conditions are observed at pH 2, 12% (w/w) of rapeseed meal after 15 min of extraction in water at room temperature. Under these conditions the extraction is highly selective, allowing a simple purification process (ammonium sulfate precipitation followed by desalting size exclusion chromatography) to get purified napins. These napins possessed significant anti-Fusarium activity (IC50 = 70 μM) and a compact secondary structure rich in α-helix, which may explain this bioactivity.  相似文献

This study investigates the influence of blood vessels on temperature distribution during high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation of liver tumors. A three-dimensional acoustics-thermal-fluid coupling model is simulated to compute the temperature field in the hepatic cancerous region. The model is based on the linear Westervelt and bioheat equations as well as the non-linear Navier–Stokes equations for the liver parenchyma and blood vessels. The effect of acoustic streaming is also taken into account in the present HIFU simulation study. We found from this three-dimensional coupling study that in large blood vessel both the convective cooling and acoustic streaming can significantly change the temperature field and thermal lesion near blood vessels.  相似文献

Despite 40 years of efforts, researchers have failed to provide calcium phosphate bone graft substitutes performing well enough to replace bone grafting procedures: their osteogenesis potential is limited, and calcium phosphates are too brittle. However, there is hope to solve the two afore-mentioned problems. First, it is now clear why nacre and bone are very tough despite a high ceramic load. Also, recent studies suggest that calcium and phosphate ions can trigger osteoinduction. The present article aims: (i) to review our current knowledge in the field of synthetic bone graft substitutes, (ii) to explain why ceramics and in particular calcium phosphates are still the most promising materials for bone graft substitution, and (iii) finally to describe the strategy to obtain osteoinductive calcium phosphate bone graft substitutes as strong as cortical bone.  相似文献

Hot pressed ZrB2–20 vol.% SiC ultra-high temperature ceramic composites have been prepared for strength and fracture investigations. Two composites fabricated under differing hot pressing temperatures with (ZSB) and without (ZS) B4C sintering aids were selected for room temperature modulus of rupture (MOR) strength and single-edge-notch bend (SENB) fracture toughness experiments. Structure property relationships were examined for both composites. MOR and stiffness temperature dependence was also investigated up to 1500 °C. Long crack propagation studies were conducted up to 1400 °C using the double cantilevered beam geometry with half-chevron-notch initiation zones. Residual Boron-rich carbide maximum particle sizes were found to be strength limiting in ZSB billets while SiC controlled strength in ZS billets. Flexure strength decreased linearly with temperature from 1000 to 1500 °C with no visible plastic deformation prior to fracture. Similar stiffness decreases were observed with a transition temperature range of 1100–1200 °C. Long crack studies produced R-curves that show no significant toughening behavior at room temperature with some modest rising R-curve behavior appearing at higher temperatures. These studies also show the plateau toughness increases with temperature up to 1200 °C. This is supported by an observed transition from primarily transgranular fracture at room temperature to primarily intergranular fracture at high temperatures. Wake zone toughening is evident up to 1000 °C with KR rise from 0.1 to 0.5 MPa√m. Beyond 1000 °C fracture mechanism transitions to include creep zone development ahead of crack tip with wake zone toughening vanishing.  相似文献
